If Therapy Dogs are Good Enough for the USA Gymnastics Team, They’re Good Enough for America’s High School Students

I don’t know about you, but I am totally hyped up for the 2024 Olympic Games, ready to cheer on Team USA in all sports. But let’s be real, the Olympic Games aren’t just any old event—this is the high-pressure world of elite sports, where the best of the best compete in the revered global arena, and when an athlete’s physical fitness and success is dependent upon their emotional wellbeing.

Which is why in the weeks leading up to the Olympic Games, I was elated to learn about USA Gymnastics prioritization of the mental and emotional wellbeing of athletes prior to the start of the games. I loved how my social media algorithm flooded my social media feed with videos and images of the USA Gymnastics team warmly embracing therapy dogs to help manage stress and anxiety.

Naturally, I loved these videos and images, and their recurring appearance inspired me to consider my own advocacy efforts. Maybe if the entire world was able to observe the positive effects of therapy dogs on the wellbeing of elite athletes then there might be a more clear pathway to connect the dots to the potential benefits for other groups, like America’s high school students.

If you know me, then you know that my next series of wonderings centered around one thematic implication: if highly driven and talented athletes benefit from the presence of therapy dogs, then high school students across America could also gain significant advantages from similar support. 

At the end of the day, high school students are not fundamentally different from elite athletes in their need for support. For high school students, the academic environment can be a significant source of stress (Maricevic, 2022). Like the gymnast’s pressure to perform flawlessly in routines, maintain peak physical condition, and compete at high-stakes events, high school students can often feel overwhelming pressure to excel academically, manage social relationships, and plan for the future. Incorporating therapy dogs into schools in the same manner as USA Gymnastics offers a valuable outlet for stress relief and emotional support for adolescents. If therapy dogs can aid aspiring Olympians in achieving their goals, they can also play a crucial role in helping America’s teenagers manage the challenges of high school.

So here we go! Here’s a brief argument for why high school students deserve therapy dogs in their learning environment just as much as elite athletes. Let’s begin!

A Quick Refresher on the Benefits of Therapy Dogs

Therapy dogs are dogs specially trained to offer comfort and companionship in a range of public and private settings, including schools, hospitals, and environments affected by traumatic events (Maricevic, 2022). Their presence profoundly impacts individuals’ emotional and mental health (Maricevic, 2022). Research, including my own, confirms that interacting with therapy dogs significantly reduces anxiety, stress, and symptoms of depression in humans, especially for adolescents (Maricevic, 2022). Furthermore, there are notable physical benefits attached to the human-animal bond, such as increased levels of oxytocin—a hormone linked to bonding and emotional well-being—and decreased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone (McDowall, 2023).

A Beacon of Possibilities

You can thank this entire post to Beacon. Beacon, a 4-year-old golden retriever therapy dog, is a pivotal part of USA Gymnastics’ efforts to transform the sport’s toxic culture.

Beacon, along with a brigade of therapy dogs contributed to the national competitions by offering a calming presence to the athletes (even swimmers). One such athlete, Joscelyn Roberson, expressed her love for Beacon saying, “He’s so cute! I’ve already told people that this is the best thing that U.S.A. Gymnastics can do for us” (Macur, 2024).

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Officer Li Li Leung, the USA Gymnastics organization made significant strides in prioritizing mental health following scandals and revelations about the toxic environment in the sport. Leung underscored the importance of mental wellness, stating, “There’s no question that there was a lesson learned from Tokyo in terms of mental wellness being so critically important” (Macur, 2024). Leung’s commitment to this priority is demonstrated through the inclusion of nearly 20 dog-and-handler teams during the U.S. National Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth this year, providing much-needed emotional support.

According to NBC News, Beacon, the organization’s “first official therapy dog,” made rounds during the trials, watching over athletes and coaches (Portée 2024). As gymnasts tackled floor routines, balance beams, and vaults, Beacon was there to alleviate the strain of injuries and the stresses of the multi-day event. Beacon’s human-run Instagram page notes that he “loves pet therapy, fridge time” and “making friends with everyone” (Portee, 2024). Beacon’s handler, Tracey Callahan Molnar, shared with ESPN that Beacon’s role involves acting as an “emotional sponge” for athletes, absorbing their stress. As Molnar explained, “Beacon gets tired by the end of the day [and] absorbs the stress of the people they’re relieving the stress off of” (Portee, 2024). Although exhausting work, it is profoundly meaningful.

Extending the Success of Therapy Dogs to High Schools

The success of Beacon and other therapy dogs with the USA Gymnastics team, as well as those that comforted members of the USA Swimming team during qualifying events, raises important questions: if therapy dogs can help aspiring Olympians achieve their dreams, in what ways, if any, can they do the same for America’s teenage population in high schools? Are high school students any less deserving of the same opportunity afforded to Olympic hopefuls? If therapy dogs provide emotional support and stress relief for success in the athletic arena, why shouldn’t they do the same for high school students to thrive in the academic arena? More importantly, why aren’t they?

While elite athletes certainly benefit from therapy dogs, high school students face unique and substantial pressures that make the support of therapy dogs not just beneficial but essential as they experience significant stress and emotional challenges that can deeply impact their academic performance and overall well-being. The academic demands, social pressures, and the uncertainty about the future create a high-stress environment. Therapy dogs offer a much-needed respite, providing emotional support and reducing stress in ways that are crucial for students navigating these formative years.

Not to mention the transition from adolescence to adulthood is a critical period of physical and emotional maturation where students are developing essential life skills, including emotional regulation and social interaction (Maricevic, 2022). Therapy dogs as a presence during this period of development help in fostering emotional resilience, enhancing social skills, and building empathy, foundational skills for personal growth and future success, thus making the presence of therapy dogs an invaluable support system during this developmental stage (Maricevic, 2022).

The research that accompanies my advocacy for therapy dogs in high school settings does not diminish the reality elite athletes face from intense pressure and high expectations. However, their access to support systems and resources is generally more robust and innovative, as observed through the inclusion of Beacon. Elite athletes often have dedicated mental health professionals, coaches, and structured programs to address their needs. In comparison, high school students may lack such comprehensive support, all the more reason to include therapy dogs as a particularly impactful and equitable enhancement to their educational experience, addressing a critical need by supporting students in a holistic and meaningful way, ultimately fostering a healthier, more supportive learning environment (Maricevic, 2022).

The example set by the USA Gymnastics team underscores the powerful role that therapy dogs can play in promoting mental health and emotional well-being. By bringing therapy dogs into high schools, educational leaders can offer students the same level of support that helps elite athletes thrive in their complex lives.

Are you convinced yet that if therapy dogs are good enough for elite athletes they are more than good enough for our high school students?

Well, here’s the deal, you should be convinced by now, and if not, let me share some important information. Incorporating therapy dogs into high schools yields a variety of positive outcomes, from enhancing the overall school environment to the student experience (Maricevic, 2022):

Hey Educators, Remember This!

Educators need to remember that while elite athletes face intense pressure and high expectations, they generally have more robust support systems and resources. They often have access to dedicated mental health professionals, coaches, and structured programs to address their needs. Despite this, a transformative leader like USA Gymnastics’ Leung recognized more needed to be done to support athletes and incorporated a seemingly unconventional resource—therapy dogs—to support team members in a truly authentic and organic way.

Educators need to remember that, in comparison to elite athletes, high school students may lack comprehensive support systems in and out of school for a myriad of reasons. This is why the inclusion of therapy dogs would be a particularly impactful and equitable enhancement to the adolescent educational experience. However, it requires a transformative leader with an innovative mindset, like Leung, to recognize the long-term benefits of including a therapy dog within their organization.

It’s clear therapy dogs are good enough for Olympians, then they are more than good enough for America’s high school students. The example set by the USA Gymnastics team highlights the significant role therapy dogs can play in fostering mental health and emotional stability. Educational leaders and stakeholders must put ego aside and kick past-practice to the curb. Bringing therapy dogs into high schools will provide students with the same level of support that contributes to the success of elite athletes. Educational stakeholders must challenge the status quo and make a meaningful advancement in supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of America’s youth.

Earlier today, I stumbled upon an Instagram post from @moderndogco that read, “Imagine if we loved each other the way our dogs love us.” Of course this post immediately struck a chord with me, as it undoubtedly has with many others. “Imagine if we loved each other the way our dogs love us” is a sentiment that, on the surface, seems straightforward, but carries with it a deep and transformative message about love, compassion, and humanity.


The Unconditional Love of Dogs

Dogs are often described as a person’s best friend, and for good reason. A dog’s love is pure, unconditional, and unwavering. Whether the human in a dog’s life had a bad day, made mistakes, or are feeling down, it is always the dog there to offer a wagging tail, the dog who is willing to do anything to elicit a smile from their person. A dog’s love doesn’t depend on their human’s actions, socio-economic status, or fluctuating moods. A dog’s love is an inherent part of who they are.

The Underlying Message

“Imagine if we loved each other the way our dogs love us,” invites us to imagine a world where we love each other with the same boundless generosity that our dogs demonstrate on-the-daily. You see, love is about embracing each other’s imperfections and offering support and kindness, no matter the circumstances. In essence, “Imagine if we loved each other the way our dogs love us,” is a call to elevate our capacity for empathy and understanding in our daily interactions, to love without conditions, judgments, or expectations.

Life’s most profound lessons often come from unexpected sources. One such source is the stoic presence of a dog in our lives. Through the lens of the human-animal bond and one particular 80s classic, I delve into our family dog Bravo’s steadfast presence and the way in which it helps reveal profound life lessons on unconditional love and loyalty.

Bravo’s story begins far from our doorstep but is forever etched in the chronicles of his Alaskan journey. One woman’s compassion and dedication set the stage for Bravo’s miraculous survival and eventual arrival in our lives. That’s why when I read on a local social media page about a little guy with big paws who needed a place to call home, I knew our hearts were big enough to welcome him with open arms.

Those who meet Bravo immediately recognize he is far from an ordinary dog. Bravo is a stunning blend of Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and Bernese Mountain Dog, with a splash of Super Mutt. This unique combination gives Bravo a majestic appearance—a regal stance of a German Shepherd, the golden warmth of a retriever, and the gentle giant presence of a Bernese. His soulful eyes, framed by his thick, multi-colored coat, reflect a depth of experience and emotion that words often fail to capture.

“The Promise” by When in Rome is one of my favorite 80s songs to sing during a round of living room karaoke, in part because it seems to resonate deeply with anyone who loves 80s music, has experienced the transformative power of unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship; oh and loves the 2004 movie Napoleon Dynamite.

But more importantly, the lyrics of this poppy-80s song speak of unwavering support and the assurance that, no matter what, someone will always be there for you—and that someone might just be a four-legged friend:

That’s why when I recently heard “The Promise” on the radio, its thematic message reverberated within me. Later that same day, I happened to capture a beautiful image of Bravo’s soulful eyes. Immediately, I put the two together. It was as if the speaker of the song was narrating Bravo’s silent vow to stand by me, stand by our family, through thick and thin.

You see, unlike humans, dogs communicate their loyalty and love through actions rather than words, underscoring the connection of the silent promise that dogs make to their human companions. “The Promise” intertwines melody and lyrics to evoke a person’s universal longing for comfort, reassurance, and security, mirroring the steadfast presence that a loyal dog offers day in and day out.

Bravo’s Unspoken Promise

From the moment Bravo entered our lives to this very moment in which I write this piece, he shared, and continues to share, an unspoken promise to be there for me, for our family in his every action.

Dogs, with their intuitive nature, grasp the very essence of human emotions. They sense when we are happy and join in our joy with wagging tails and playful antics. They also detect our sadness and respond with gentle nudges and soulful eyes that seem to say, “I’m here.” The unspoken promise between humans and dogs parallels the beautifully encapsulated motif in “The Promise.”

Bravo’s presence serves as a reminder of the silent promises that bind us. He stands by us during difficult times, offering comfort without words. Four Dogs and a Vacuum: Building Trust, Security, and Life Lessons

Sure, you’ve heard daunting stories about what life is like vacuuming with pets in the house. Funny thing, in our household, when it comes time to vacuum—every day—it’s surprisingly calm. Despite having 450 pounds of dog sprawled across the floor—Judge, our German Shepherd; Daisy, our Leonberger; Bud, our Golden Retriever; and the lovable Bravo, who is a little bit of everything—no one so much as flinches when the vacuum comes out. Come to think of it, not one of my dogs, from the age of 4 to this moment, has ever feared the vacuum. Here’s why that matters, what it says about the generational trust we’ve built together, and the lessons we can learn from our furry friends about human interactions.

The Vacuum Chronicles

I pull the vacuum cleaner out of the closet, and instead of the pandemonium of scattering dogs, there’s just a curious head tilt from Judge, a sleepy glance from Daisy, a wagging tail from Bud, and a completely unphased response from Bravo. The vacuum roars to life, and still, these four canine companions remain calm, cool, and collected.

Building Trust, One Woof at a Time

The journey to this serene scene wasn’t instantaneous. It took patience and a lot of love. From the very beginning, I ensured that the vacuum wasn’t some monstrous, roaring beast but just another part of our daily life. I introduced it slowly, letting each dog investigate it while it was off.

Over time, they learned that the vacuum was not an enemy but just a loud, rolling thing that sometimes interrupted nap time. Judge, with his naturally protective instincts, came to understand that if I was okay with the vacuum, he could be too. Daisy, usually unbothered by much of anything, followed suit, trusting the calm energy in the room. Bud viewed the vacuum as just another opportunity to be close to me, and our clever mutt figured out that it meant lots of praise and treats for staying calm.

The Power of Routine

Dogs are creatures of habit. By incorporating the vacuum into our regular cleaning routine, it became just another predictable event in their day. They knew what to expect and trusted that their environment remained safe. This familiarity reinforced their sense of security.

Judge, with his keen sense of order, appreciated the predictability. Daisy, who could sleep through a thunderstorm, found comfort in the consistency. Bud, ever the optimist, embraced the routine as just another part of his happy day. And Bravo, ever adaptable, saw it as a non-event.

In our household, trust isn’t measured by pounds, but if it were, we’d have a solid 450 pounds of it. Our four dogs, with their distinct personalities, have all come to understand that in our house, their people are their protectors and providers. They know that if we’re calm, they can be too.

  • Creating Safe Spaces: Providing a sense of safety and security is essential. Whether it’s a calm household for our pets or a supportive environment for our friends and family, people thrive when they feel safe and cared for.

Real-Life Applications: Therapy Dogs in High School Settings

Several schools and therapy programs have successfully integrated therapy dogs to help students develop empathy and other social skills (Maricevic, 2022). For instance, programs like “Reading to Dogs” in libraries and schools encourage children and teens to read aloud to therapy dogs, improving their reading skills and building a sense of empathy and connection.

While the absence of an empathic parent can pose significant challenges for a teen’s emotional development, therapy dogs offer a viable and effective alternative to cultivate empathy. By providing emotional support, reducing stress, improving social skills, and modeling empathic behaviors, therapy dogs can fill a crucial gap, ensuring that all teens have the opportunity to develop this essential human trait (Maricevic, 2022).

Which is why the integration of therapy dogs in high school settings is an innovative approach that has proven to be highly beneficial in fostering empathy, reducing stress, and enhancing social skills among students (Maricevic, 2022). Here are some specific ways therapy dogs can make a significant impact in high schools:

Stress Relief and Mental Health Support

High school can be an incredibly stressful time for students due to academic pressures, social dynamics, and the challenges of adolescence (Maricevic, 2022). Therapy dogs can provide a calming presence, helping students manage stress and anxiety. Schools that have implemented therapy dog programs often report noticeable improvements in the overall mental health of their students (Maricevic, 2022).

Counseling Sessions: Therapy dogs can be incorporated into school counseling sessions. Their presence helps create a more relaxed environment, making it easier for students to open up and discuss their feelings and issues (Maricevic, 2022). This can be particularly beneficial for students who are reluctant to seek help from a counselor.

Stress-Relief Zones: Some high schools have established designated areas where students can interact with therapy dogs during breaks or free periods (Maricevic, 2022). These stress-relief zones provide a much-needed respite from the pressures of school life and offer a safe space for students to unwind and recharge.

Crisis Intervention: In the aftermath of traumatic events, therapy dogs can be brought in to provide comfort and emotional support to students. Their calming presence can help students feel safer and more secure, aiding in the healing process (Maricevic, 2022).

I recently read a social media post by Canine Companions in which the organization highlighted therapy dog Landon and his involvement in the UC Davis Health’s CARE (Creativity, Amenities, Relaxation, Exploration) Project. UC Davis Health takes great pride in the CARE Project, with a focus on treating the whole patient: mind, body, and spirit, its mission goes beyond conventional medical approaches, and recognizes the therapeutic power of what may at first seem to be unconventional—the human-animal bond.

In a healthcare environment, where stress and anxiety can be overwhelming, the introduction of therapy dogs like Landon serves as a beacon of hope and motivation. The partnership between UC Davis Health, Landon and his volunteer handler, Pat Tull, exemplifies the profound impact animals can have on the well-being of individuals facing health challenges. You see, Landon’s supportive role to patients and staff alike, not only highlights the significance of certified therapy dogs but also emphasizes the compassion and comfort they bring to those undergoing hospitalization, and those delivering the medical care.

The CARE Project and UC Davis Health’s commitment to the human-animal bond contributes to patients’ emotional well-being and encourages their active engagement in treatment, which fosters a holistic approach to healthcare. Katie Lorain, the creative arts and recreation therapy manager of the CARE Project, observes patients moved to tears upon encountering a therapy dog, which underscores the transformative nature of these interactions. Lorain’s observations of the patient-therapy dog relationship in the health care setting serves as a testament to the unique and invaluable role that animals can play in enhancing the human experience, especially in challenging circumstances.

The emotional response of patients, often moved to tears at the mere sight of these canine companions, speaks volumes about the profound connection forged in these moments. Celebrating Black History Month: Honoring Tina Turner


In honor of Black History Month, each week I will delve into the heartwarming bond between Black voices and their cherished canine companions.

For my final post, I pay tribute to the remarkable life of the iconic Tina Turner, a music legend who reshaped the rock ‘n’ roll landscape and is forever immortalized as the #Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Tina’s electrifying performances, soulful voice, and resilient spirit made her a music icon and one of my favorite artists to karaoke!

I personally found myself even more inspired by Tina after learning about this 1971 image depicting Tina, her son Ronnie, and their majestic Great Dane, Onyx. You see, this image encapsulates the dynamic energy of the rock legend and the serene strength of a canine companion, solidifying the position held by many, other than myself, that dogs are not just pets; they are steadfast companions, offering a unique and irreplaceable bond, one that transcends barriers imposed by others and the society in which they live.

Additionally, the image suggests Onyx exemplified the quintessential #GreatDane attributes, loyalty and a gentle demeanor, not because of his regal posture, but more so by the body language of Onyx’s humans—Tina’s loving embrace of Onyx, the position of her arm and her beaming smile, not to mention her son’s joyous expression. In this moment, the trio appear to share simultaneous happiness.

I’m left to wonder about the myriad of ways Onyx may have offered Tina unwavering reinforcements through the highs and lows of the early days of her illustrious career, including her personal hardships and quest for true love. In the whirlwind of a demanding career, one may consider that the presence of a loyal canine friend, like Onyx, served as a grounding force, for dogs, with their intuitive understanding and unconditional love, fulfill an area of need within their person.

Tina and Onyx, another beautiful example of the human-animal bond to further substantiate my personal belief that standing alongside every great woman is a stoic canine companion (or four). At the end of the day, dogs really are “Simply the Best.”

This is where the concept of Digital Knowledge Portfolios becomes a pivotal tool in the academic journey, especially for those pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), Diploma Programme (DP), and beyond.

Digital Knowledge Portfolios serve as dynamic repositories, housing a student’s academic achievements, reflections, and growth over time. Within the context of the IB framework, they play a crucial role in aligning with the program’s core principles and objectives.

Understanding the IB MYP Framework

The MYP emphasizes holistic learning, encouraging students to explore connections between disciplines while fostering critical thinking and communication skills. It’s within this interdisciplinary approach that Digital Knowledge Portfolios find their stride, enabling students to document projects, essays, artistic creations, and other endeavors that exhibit their multifaceted talents.

When transitioning to the DP, these portfolios become even more vital. The program’s rigorous demands necessitate evidence of research, creativity, and reflection – elements that can be effectively showcased through digital portfolios. Students demonstrate their growth, track their academic journey, and exhibit the skills and attributes sought after in the DP curriculum.

The Power of Reflection and Connection

Digital Knowledge Portfolios are not just repositories of work; they are reflective spaces where students can articulate their learning process, challenges faced, and growth achieved. Through this reflective practice, students gain a deeper understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement, aligning with the IB’s emphasis on metacognition and self-awareness.

Moreover, these portfolios bridge the gap between academic endeavors and future aspirations. They serve as tangible evidence of a student’s capabilities, aiding college admissions, scholarship applications, and career pursuits. As the world increasingly values digital literacy and the ability to curate one’s online presence, the Digital Knowledge Portfolios become invaluable assets.

Aligning IB Command Terms within the Digital Knowledge Portfolio

The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is renowned for its rigorous academic standards and precise language used to articulate student expectations. Central to this I IB language are Command Terms – key words that direct students on how to approach their learning.

Integrating Command Terms Strategically

Integrating the IB’s Command Terms within the Digital Knowledge Portfolio is instrumental in showcasing a student’s mastery of these skills as it pertains to the rigors of the IB’s program.

First, students must determine and demonstrate understanding of the terminology.
Within the Digital Knowledge Portfolio, sections are dedicated to honoring the IB’s definition of the Command Term, as well as designated spaces for students to define the Command Terms in their own words. Clearly defining the Command Terms, in their own words, confirms a foundational understanding of the IB’s terminology and students’ ownership of learning.

Then, students strategically align their work to the content specific Command Terms. Students identify an artifact, include an image and/or a direct link to the artifact, and then justify their rationale for the selected artifact.

Hypothetical Artifacts & Justification

In this section, I put forth hypothetical artifacts and justification aligned to some of the Command Terms to showcase how a student might demonstrate engagement in the IB curriculum framework and ownership of learning.

  • Define: The artifact might be an essay or research paper where the student meticulously defines and clarifies key terms within a specific subject area. The justification here would involve highlighting how this artifact serves to establish a foundational understanding of the topic under discussion.
  • Explain: An artifact showcasing an elaborate project presentation or an instructional video might justify its inclusion by emphasizing how it succinctly explains complex concepts or methodologies, showcasing the student’s adeptness in simplifying intricate ideas.
  • Evaluate: If a portfolio entry involves a reflective piece where the student assesses the efficacy of a scientific experiment or a historical analysis, the justification would focus on how this artifact demonstrates the student’s capacity for critical evaluation.
  • Discuss: In the case of a recorded debate or a written dialogue on socio-political issues, the justification would elucidate how this artifact displays the student’s ability to engage in meaningful discussions, considering multiple perspectives.
  • Compare and Contrast: An artifact might feature a project that compares and contrasts different literary works or scientific theories, justifying its inclusion by highlighting how it showcases the student’s understanding of interdisciplinary connections.

Conclusion

By consciously aligning their work to the IB Command Terms within the Digital Knowledge Portfolio, students not only showcase their understanding of these terms but also demonstrate their ability to engage with the academic material at a higher level. This strategic curation enhances the depth of the Digital Knowledge Portfolio, presenting a comprehensive overview of a student’s academic journey while explicitly highlighting their mastery of the IB’s language and expectations.

Celebrating Humble Honors: A Journey Among Champions in Advocacy

As 2023 comes to an end, I am reminded of an extraordinary privilege afforded to me this year—being featured alongside incredible human-animal bond advocates in the 2023 podcast series, Dog Save the People. In a world filled with remarkable voices dedicated to uplifting humanity, there are those who stand out, inspiring change and progress. To find myself nestled amidst luminaries—a Nobel Prize winner and CNN’s #2023HeroOfTheYear, well, to say it was a surreal experience would be an understatement.

The honor was not just a personal triumph. Dog Save the People’s decision to devote an entire episode to my research and to unpack the why behind the need for therapy dogs in high school settings, gave credence to my research, the human-animal bond (specifically the one between teenagers and therapy dogs), and so much more. But here’s the best part, I’m not the only person to hold such convictions.

Dog Save the People’s dedication to nurturing meaningful discussions, with a focus on the profound bond between humans and animals, is truly commendable. Each episode’s authentic portrayal and reverence for diverse perspectives reflects an unwavering commitment to fostering impactful dialogue for the greater good.

And then there’s my voice.

The inclusion of my voice alongside this esteemed 2023 group of guests serves as a reminder of the collective strength found in passionate advocacy. It’s a testament to the transformative potential of shared conversations and the ripple effect they create.

The Beauty of the Inquiry Conversation

Unearthing School Needs, Listening, and Fostering Hope

We all know the fact that no two schools are alike. Each school has its unique set of strengths and challenges, its own character and culture, its own needs. Which is why the inquiry conversation, like those I have with school districts interested in learning more about what exactly a therapy dog program would look like in their school, is a truly beautiful thing. Let me tell you why.

During these conversations, I listen… a lot. I listen to educators share their experiences and insights. I get an insider’s perspective that no policy document or data report can ever fully capture. I hear the voices of passionate educators, who use their passion and commitment to paint a vivid picture of the real-world challenges faced by students in the day-to-day realities of the 21st century classroom.

Just Listen

Listening to educators during inquiry conversations is not just about absorbing information; it’s about building a bridge of trust and understanding. It’s about acknowledging the educators expertise, valuing their contributions to the organization, and recognizing how their efforts to even initiate an inquiry conversation in the first place is rooted in the best interest of students.

If an educator in your learning organization is passionate about a cause, advocates for their students’ needs, takes time out of their evening to connect with someone, like me, who can provide insight and thoughts for further consideration, that’s a pretty dang good, awesome, educator. Never, ever, let them go.

Hopes 

Inquiry conversations often reveal the hopes and dreams educators hold for their students. These hopes and dreams are deeply rooted in a genuine commitment to fostering the growth, well-being, and success for each learner.

And with each conversation, the voice of the educator carries with it a vision of what they wish for their students. It might be the hope for greater inclusivity with the student body, improved access to resources, or enhanced social-emotional support. 

Step One, Done.

So here’s to those next steps, the ones that take a conversation of hypotheticals to reality. And it will be a journey–a journey that involves dedication, collaboration, and a deep commitment to the well-being of students.
